  • Baratza Sette 270Wi Gearbox Failure

After only 15 months of use, the grinder's gearbox has failed, and making an awful noise as it attempts to turn the burrs; this also happened to the older model I had, the 270W, so I've contacted Baratza, in the US, and they confirmed that it was a KNOWN issue in the 270W and 270Wi gearboxes, so I'm now hoping that they will replace this part for FREE even though the Warranty lapsed in January 2020.

    Will update soon!

Thanks for the post OP. I have the same model. Been using it about 2 yrs with no issue, but then I only make 2 espressos/day, so nothing heavy. However, the fact that they recognize the issue - I wonder if that means I should reach out to Baratza (I bought direct) and see if they will offer to replace...

if it goes pear shaped, then I'm sure they will replace parts without charge knowing the design weakness at the time of manufacture!

I spaced on the model. I have the smaller Sette 30. But I emailed them anyway and they got back to me in 24 hrs asking if I'm comfortable doing a gearbox replacement (they provided instructions) and said they would ship out a new gearbox to me. Looks like the 30. has the same innards.

Customer service is indeed quality, even if the product is not necessarily as good

I was very happy user of etzMax Light-t. Etzinger was involved in the design of Sette, and is delivering the burr set to Baratza.
However Etzinger doesn't participate in the manufacturing process of Sette.
The design of etzMax is different, much more resilient as this is commercial class grinder. I highly recommend etzMax.

the price difference is quite considerable between the Sette Wi and the eTZMax, but they're both made for the price you pay for them!

well. yet again, another gearbox failure, but thankfully, Baratza Support, in the USA, have told me that they'll send a free replacement Gearbox, which is great; what a good company, but just hope the gearbox has improved metal gears rather than plastic!
