• Mago Maga Smart Home Coffee Bean Roaster v1.2

With special thanks to: Sarah Zhang, Business Development Manager for Mago Maga, for the kind assistance, and for providing this unit for testing!

    Introduction:

The Mago Maga Smart Home Coffee Bean Roaster, was in the design process for over 2 years by an Asian company called: Time100 Inc., and registered in New York.

In this review, I'm using version 1.2 with the improved Chaff collector lockable lid 'vent' which can be gradually opened or closed to retain more heat or reduce it.

This unique Home roaster first launched via Indiegogo, in early 2024 to astounding success by a Chinese company called: Time100 Inc., brand named: Mago Maga - from Latin meaning 'Magician'.
symbolizing the magical transformation of raw coffee beans into perfectly roasted beans; conjuring up your favourite mysterious coffee flavors!
The Mago Maga Smart Home Coffee Bean Roaster has a massive 300g green beans capacity, and it roasts using fluid bed technology, which means a fan heated airflow is created using convection heat that comes from the bottom of the roasting chamber which makes the beans levitate on a bed of hot air.
It gives the home user, a full visual experience, with greater capacity to roast quickly, and bulk up for the week ahead!

    The Design:

The Mago Maga Home roaster has touch sensitive buttons on the front control panel with a nice sized LCD Digital Display showing the progress of the roast with a roast timer, fan speed, temperature, and cooling countdown as well as a Heat and Cool icon indicators; the whole unit is sturdy enough in size, with a 360 degree heat resistant safety glass twin walled roast chamber, and a bean chaff collector; similar to the Hearthware i-Roast unit, that sits on top of the roast chamber to catch the flying chaff; the lid has a nicely designed Coffee Bean handle so you can unlock/lock the collector in place after emptying it; the lid also incorporates a redesigned adjustable 'heat' vent; technology is what makes the Mago Maga Home roaster shine, with sensors to best achieve accurate results, and inbuilt Roast Profiles that help the Home User, learn the craft of home roasting; what impressed me was the cleverly designed bottom side exit chute with an auto air blower, so every bean is extra cooled and ejected quickly and safely!

The Mago Maga Home roaster, is for those Home Users, who are just getting into the World of home roasting, and are not ready for the more advanced technical level units, that are double the price, but with far less capacity; such as the Ikawa Home roaster...

    Roasting Programmes:

Auto Mode: has 5 Pre-set Roast Profile levels; 3 x profiles for 300g batches, and 2 x profiles for 150g batches; from Dark (5 Bars) to Light roasts (3 Bars); once the roast has completed, it Auto-Cools the beans to 55c.

I had good success with the 4 Bar Auto Profile hitting 210c, then the roaster starts auto cooling for a light to medium roast using a Honduras Single Origin peaberry.

Fot those who enjoy a dark roast, then a higher temperature of 214c is hit on the 5 Bar auto profile!

    or:

Manual Mode: you can work to your own roast parameters on the fly by adjusting the fan speed and adjusting the temperature; you also have full control of the Cooling control; this model version can't save profiles in this mode to the roaster, but it's coming in 2026!

    In Operation:
It's a tad loud with the fan and motor running, but you can just about hear the 1st Crack stage for those who enjoy light roasts!

At different times during the roast, the fan speed, and temperature, changes, so this is just following what the Profile is set to per programme chosen!

I'm reliably informed that the inbuilt roast profiles were created by 'seasoned coffee roasters' so they should meet to your expectations!

If for whatever reason you wish to stop the roast during it's auto cycle, then you can just press the Cool button!

    In Summary:
This 300g capacity roaster achieves it's objectives as a high quality unit for the home user by offering automatic roast profiles, as well as the advanced manual mode to steer the user onto the next level of roasting; the highest temperature I achieved was 214c which is more than enough heat to balance out an even roast especially when using the Manual mode!
Bean size, and density, are important when factoring in a profile, so adjust accordingly!
I'd much prefer it if the Mago Maga roaster cools to around 20c rather than at 55c at present, because the sooner it cools then you can stop the bean from losing any more of those prized flavour aromatics!

    Degas:
Finally, let your freshly roasted beans rest for a minimum of a few days or more to degas (release CO2) before grinding; a dark roast is more porous and requires less time to degas than a light roast which is more dense and is slower to degas; this will enhance the flavour compounds in the cup like a good aged wine!

    In Conclusion:
The Mago Maga Smart Home Coffee Bean Roaster, is the best bang for buck fluid bed Home roaster on the market for sure; it's a beginners entry level roaster, and it has a very promising future with advanced functionality upgrades to come!

UK Pricing: £480 - $580 USD - Price may vary according to Country/Location!

    Happy Roasting!
